Welcome to my blog everyone! In case you are confused about its name, let me explain.

We all know and are taught to see the wood for the trees - not to get bogged down in details, to see the bigger picture. I value that and I can often benefit from being reminded of it myself.

However, these days, I fear we might rather be losing the trees for the wood. Our public discourse has become a series of short slogans, TikTok-able aphorisms, broad "moral" principles loaded with ideas of victimhood, oppression and catastrophe, and applied haphazardly without any reference to reality or facts, and especially with no thought of means and consequences.

I don't like this state of affairs, and that is my signal to start rectifying it in my small way. In this blog, I am going to supply trees to this picture - pillars of reality with roots in the ground, so we may actually know and actually understand what we are dealing with before we make decisions.

I am no expert in anything, but I have rigour, curiosity and enormous passion for meaningful debate. I am writing this blog mostly to educate myself, starting with topics I am personally curious about, and making them plain without subtracting from their substance.
